Silence Is No Longer an Option: A Call for Peace and Understanding in Nigeria By, Jamilu Sani Rarah Sokoto

I would normally not do this, however, silence is no longer an option.

The world woke up to a tweet from a global leader about 🇳🇬 Nigeria and as a Nigerian who is deeply passionate about peace in our world, especially in my home country, remaining silent would mean consent to a message that does not represent our reality.

As someone from Northern Nigeria  living in the North and a Muslim  I understand the pain and complexity that many cannot express in ways the world easily understands. Countless people suffer and die quietly, victims of insurgency, poverty, and neglect.

For over a decade, I have been involved in humanitarian and relief work across Northern Nigeria. In that time, I’ve seen unimaginable suffering  families displaced, communities destroyed, children orphaned  and I’ve faced personal threats from those who falsely claim to represent the same faith I hold dear.

Yet, I remain steadfast in my commitment to serve humanity, rebuild hope, and tell the true story of what is happening.

The heartbreaking truth is that the majority of those affected by the insurgency are Muslims. But whether Muslim or Christian, we must remember: the right to life is sacred — no one has the right to take what they cannot give.

Beyond our borders, the world has witnessed the devastating consequences of so-called “liberations” and foreign interventions. History teaches us that such actions rarely bring peace  they bring deeper chaos.

Nigeria, the most populous Black nation on earth, has produced some of the world’s finest leaders, thinkers, and peacemakers. Calls for war or external interference must be firmly rejected. What we need is healing, unity, and understanding not destruction.

As the Bible reminds us:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” —Matthew 5:9

Let us choose peace over provocation, compassion over division, and truth over propaganda. Nigeria’s story is not one of war  it is one of resilience, faith, and hope for a better tomorrow.
